What To Expect

Drums are a very fun instrument to play, especially if

you are a beginner. More than any other instrument,

you can quickly start playing music you enjoy. That is

what we will do! Our drum lessons will end with you

playing what you have learned along with a little bit of

music. Most drumming you hear is built off of a few

standard beats. Jason McGerr (Death Cab For Cutie)

describes these beats as "the money beats." As a drum

teacher I will help you learn these beats using songs

you love. I like to throw in some special challenges

to help you develop creativity. The best drummers

usually stick to the basics, but understand how to

build bigger ideas around the basic frame. I always

challenge my students, but I will keep our challenges

resonable. Also, I don't make it a habit of throwing

furniture or yelling if you haven't mastered everything

in a week. . . unless you like that kind of motivation.

Materials

While I do have books that I like to use, I usually

wait a few lessons before choosing a book. Most

of the books I use cost ten to twenty-five

dollars. Also, I will give you a few CDs of jam

tracks with which you might sharpen your skills.

A drum set is a good thing, but it is not a

requirement. I have had a few students start with

buckets and coffee cans! You will need sticks.

If you don't have a pair, I would be glad to give

you one. As a teacher, I try to adapt to you

rather than do the "my way or the highway"

thing. For that reason, I don't immediately pick

a book. If you don't know where to start in

finding a drum kit, I can give suggestions or meet

you at the store to pick out the right set.
